As you probably know at this point, I’m not a huge fan of medicine and the pharmaceutical companies.  It’s not that they don’t serve a purpose, it’s just that I don’t subscribe to the “pill for every ill” and treating the symptoms instead of the cause of the problem.  I love preventative lifestyle medicine, not reactive phamacological interventions.  One of my biggest beefs with medicine companies though is that they’ve ruined the taste of cherry for millions of people.  Whenever people taste cherry, they immediately think medicine.

Cactus Leaf Smoothie

I’ve been to Mexico several times and one of my favorite drink is their “green juice”. Although there are many variations, the standard fruits and vegetables used are the Nopal cactus leaf, pineapple, orange, celery and persimmon. I found Nopal cactus leaves at a nearby Asian market yesterday and decided to go for it.

Lemon Citrus Smoothie


Hmmmm something refreshing, tangy and smooth.  I’m thinking of a lemon citrus smoothie. How about you?  Happy spring day everyone!

Yields: 3 (16 oz) glasses


  • 2 lemons, peeled & cut up
  • 1 orange, peeled & cut up
  • 1 organic green apple, washed, cored & cut up
  • 1 cup organic spinach
  • 1 ripe banana, peeled
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 2 cups ice
  • 5 medjool dates, pitted

How to make it:

Simply place all the ingredients in a blender or Vitamix.
